Team Ohio has grown quite fond of Greco-Roman and their All-American showings support that notion.
Ohio went to Fargo, N.D. for the Junior and 16U National Championships and for the third straight year finished with 12 All-Americans.
The Junior team finished tied for sixth and the 16U team finished eighth to mark the second year in a row that each squad logged a top 10 finish.
“Consistency is the right word,” Greco director Art Kallai said. “The improvement the junior team shows the strength of our 16U team last year. They were able to step up to that next level and show how good Ohio wrestling can be. Four finalists were great.”
Consistency and Team Ohio showed throughout with Tommy Wurster (120 pounds) and Xander Horak (215) logging runner-up finish in 16U.
Maksym and Dmytro Chubenko (144, 150) earned second-place finishes in the Junior division and each team logged six All-Americans.
Jakob Hoke (6th, 1750, Tommy Rowlands (7th, 157) and Braydon Studer (8th, 113) logged top eight finishes in 16U to join Wurster and Horak.
Carter Lester (3rd,190), Cael Gilmore (4th, 157), Michael Boyle (5th, 215) and Eli Esguerra (7th, 157) joined the Chubenko twins with All-American showings in the Junior rankings.
“We have to keep coaching these up and reminding them where we were in the past,” Kallai said. “It’s our job to take that next step. We’re happy, but we need to stay hungry. We have to keep that excitement going. We have lean on our junior and senior wrestlers to keep this moving forward.”
